The Scissors or Shear

The Scissors or Shear

Beauty shears are a very complex and delicate assembled unit. The hollow ground inside of the blades and ride line that must be maintained while creating a razor sharp convex edge. I make certain that all parts that could be damaged or aging are examined, repaired, or replaced, many of which are included in the price of sharpening.

Shear Sharpening:

We begin the process by visually examining, opening and closing the shears, and test cutting to determine the amount of work that is going to be required to bring your shear back to new or better than new condition. Each shear is then disassembled, and inspected thoroughly, looking at both inside and outside edges, ride line, and pivot area, It is at this time that I will identify what parts such as washers, bumpers, or tangs need to be replaced. I begin by creating the perfect ride line on my water stone.  Next, I identify the proper angle and  proceed to sharpen and convex with the appropriate abrasive discs for each individual shear and run my machine at a slower speeds which will remove the minimum amount of material necessary to create the smallest sharpening burr necessary to achieve that razor sharp edge. After the burr has been achieved, we will use a less aggressive abrasive disc to convex and remove the scratches created during the sharpening process. I will then use the water stone to remove the sharpening burr and follow that with the honing disc bringing each blade to a mirror finish with a razor sharp edge. I then reassemble the shear, remove the honing burr and adjust the tension making certain that the blades interfere at from one half to one third of the way up upon the fall test. Finally, I use single ply tissue and then human hair to test cut and turn the finished shear over to my customer for them to use. Your satisfaction is guaranteed or you pay nothing!

Resharpening or Correcting:

In the event of shears being sharpened incorrectly by another sharpener, we will do our absolute best to revive them to a functional edge that will last long as well as correct the issues at hand. I get comments like this all the time. “O-M-G these cut better than they did when they were new” and “I don’t believe it! You restored the shears I thought were ruined.”
