About Us

If you use Japanese hair cutting shears in your salon, then you know how important it is to keep them sharp. It takes training, experience and the right equipment to maintain both convex and bevel edges and extend the life of the Japanese shear’s blade. I guarantee that your shears will cut like they did when they were new. If I cannot satisfy your expectations, you will pay nothing.
You’re probably asking yourself, “Why should I trust Jack and Superior Edge Sharpening when most of the other sharpeners I’ve used have produced mediocre results at best?” The answer is that during my 20 plus years of sharpening, I have seen and expertly completed thousands of shears. The skills that I have acquired over this period along with my industry leading Wolff Hira To flat hone allow me to create the sharpest edge while removing the minimum material each and every time!

ON SITE SERVICE:

When I arrive, I will bring in my equipment along with a terrific assortment of shears and you will immediately see that I am fully prepared for the job at hand. I require a small work space with access to electricity where I can happily perform expert scissor sharpening at an empty work station shelve, on top of washing machines or counter tops in your break room. If ample lighting is an issue, I have additional lighting that allows me to expertly sharpen every time. You will generally not hear a peep out of me as I examine and follow decade long procedures that I have developed. You may even enjoy watching how it’s done, and I will gladly answer questions about what I do. I also provide a selection of shears (I sell several brands at phenomenal savings) for you to use while I’m working on yours so that you don’t lose any productivity. When I have completed the service call, I promise to clean up any mess.

SCISSOR MAINTENANCE:

Scissor maintenance is very critical to keep the edge working in optimum performance. At the end of each working day, the scissors should be wiped down with a chamois. Place a small amount of Isopropyl alcohol on the chamois and wipe each blade separately. (careful not to cut yourself).

Regularly oil the scissors in the pivot area and around the screw head using Quality scissor oil.

Sharpening is recommended every 3 to 6 months (unless they are dropped or damaged)
Keep scissors closed when not in use and store them in a scissor case or holster.

Check and adjust proper tension daily. Tight tension will cause blades to damage and cause nicks to the blades. If the tension is not adjusted, they will not cut properly.
You should only cut hair and nothing else.

Regular servicing will prolong the life of the scissors and helps reduce repetitive strain on your wrists and thumb.

WORDS OF CAUTION:

When I began sharpening in 1997, the most popular scissor sharpening machine for beauty shears was the dual headed grinding machine, pictured below. While that dual wheel grinder did sharpen and hone the shears to perform well, its 3450 rpm single speed motor with its 8000 grit diamond wheel removed so much material that the shears were ground away after about 10 sharpenings regardless of how light a touch one had on the diamond wheel. Fast forward to 2020 and that machine remains the most popular machine because of its price and ease of use. While these machines do a good job on bevel edge grooming scissors, these vertical grinders are not what I recommend for sharpening any beauty shears because of that fast rotating single speed motor and super aggressive 8000 grit diamond wheel.

While I still own that 23 year old machine, it has long been retired in place of the Wolff Hira To flat hone that I use expertly and highly recommend. The variable speed motor can be used with lesser aggressive grit discs at 750 to 1000 rpm to remove minimal material allowing the shears to be sharpened up to 50 times. Of course the skill of the operator and condition of the shears will determine how many times the shear can successfully be restored to new or better than new condition.

In conclusion, I would suggest that you ask your sharpener what machine he is using prior to allowing your shears or scissors to be sharpened. If he has a vertical grinder, I would suggest you decline and utilize a sharpener with skills, experience, and a flat hone variable speed machine. Better yet, give me a call and schedule the service. You will be happy that you did!
